A 19-year-old mom of twin baby boys has died after she was struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross a busy highway in New Orleans.
On Sunday, Feb. 22, just after 6 p.m. local time, a woman — later identified by family as Keydi Matute Antunez — was walking across the westbound lanes of Chef Menteur Highway near the intersection of Plum Orchard Street when she was hit by two vehicles, the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
Responding officers discovered her “in the roadway, suffering from multiple injuries,” police said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
The two drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating with authorities.
An investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time, a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department confirms to PEOPLE.
Following the young woman’s death, her family is sharing their heartbreak as they care for her two 6-month-old sons left behind, CBS affiliate WWL, FOX affiliate WVUE and NBC affiliate WDSU reported.
One of her sisters, Lady Antunez, told WWL that Keydi was a hardworking and loving mom. She was at her house that evening, and last saw Keydi as she left to get some items from a nearby store. But her 19-year-old sister never came back.
“I don’t know how to explain,” Lady said of her pain, speaking to the outlet in Spanish. “I don’t have the words, really.”
The family told WVUE that Keydi moved from Honduras to New Orleans four years ago to carve out a better future for herself. The single mom worked multiple jobs to support her young family and had many dreams.
Her sister, Lady, is now working on getting custody of her twin nephews — and urges drivers to be more careful on the congested highway.
“There’s no money. There’s no aunt. There is no grandparent. There is no sibling,” Keydi’s other sister told the outlet. “There is nothing like a mother’s love and care. It’s irreplaceable.”

A person who identified themselves as a relative launched a GoFundMe to help cover the young woman’s funeral expenses.
“She was a sweet mother [who] really loved her babies,” wrote the organizer, who didn’t immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
