- A bride shared on Reddit that the groom’s parents didn’t give the couple a wedding gift
- They were shocked when they found out the reason why
- “We didn’t know what to think of it,” the bride wrote
A newly married couple got wedding gifts from all of their guests — except the groom’s parents. They were taken aback from they learned the reason why.
In a post on Reddit, the bride shared that she and her husband tied the knot a month ago and had a “perfect” and “wonderful” wedding day. However, they later realized that the groom’s parents were the only people not to give them a present, which puzzled them.
“[It] was weird since they are financially well off [and] they gave a nice wedding gift to my husband’s brother. Mind you, not only didn’t we get a gift, but they didn’t write a card or anything really,” the bride noted.

“We didn’t know what to think of it, and my husband was too hurt and annoyed to even bring it up, [but] a couple of days ago he did,” she continued.
When the groom “nicely” asked his parents if the lack of a gift was “on purpose or a mistake,” his 60-year-old father told him that since some of the wedding guests (about 20 people) stayed at their house for the event, “all the food, water and electricity they spent really was our wedding gift.”
The bride then explained in her post that these 20 people were family members of her in-laws, and that it was they who invited the relatives to stay in their home.
“So his explanation makes no sense to me,” the bride wrote, adding, “I would have 100% understand if he had said ‘hey guys we’ve spent a lot of money this week with the family [staying] with us so we really can’t afford having a gift for you but here are some flowers and a thoughtful letter.’ But the whole ‘we fed half of the guests pre-wedding day so that’s your gift’ thing rubs me so wrong and makes me angry.”
She went on to note that she and her husband “paid for everything” for their wedding themselves.

Seeking feedback, the bride asked fellow Redditors, “Am I crazy to feel like [my in-laws] thinking that having their own sisters and cousins and whatnot staying at their house is somehow our wedding gift?”

In the comments section, many readers agreed that “you are not entitled to wedding gifts from anyone,” but questioned the in-laws’ decision to give a wedding gift to one of their sons and not the other.
“So they gave your husband’s brother and his wife a gift, but not your husband and you,” one person wrote. “Think your husband just found out who the golden child is.”
“You’re [not the a——] for feeling frustrated about them calling their personal choice to host their own family a gift to you and your husband, especially without discussing that with you first. That would drive me nuts. As you already acknowledged, of course, they don’t owe you a gift, but it’s incredibly sh—- to not give you anything at all,” someone else said.
Quite a few people urged the bride to “let it go” and not let the slight “ruin” her relationship with her in-laws.
“Don’t waste your time worrying about whether it was the right thing or speculating over what it means,” a commenter wrote, while another person said, “This one will bite you in the buttocks if you let it keep bothering you and your husband. Move on and enjoy being a newlywed.”
