Having a dog fills my days with games of fetch, long morning walks, and extra cuddles on the couch. While it’s one of my favorite ways to pass the time, the reality of work, friends, and other obligations require me to find alternative ways to keep my pet occupied while I’m busy or not home.
Like most pet owners, I have purchased many dog toys and games over the years with this need in mind, but the search for stimulating options that actually keep her attention felt endless. I recently had the chance to test out a pizza-themed puzzle mat, and it’s safe to say that we’re both obsessed. While I’ve given her puzzle games and lick mats in the past, the time it takes to prepare the toys can be frustrating, and my dog often becomes disinterested if the game is too difficult. This mat offers an ideal balance, since I can quickly hide kibble and cookies without any additional work needed. Plus, fabric barriers easily release the treats as she’s playing, so it keeps her engaged the whole time.
One side of the mat has fabric pepperoni and mushroom slices, which open just enough to fit small treats. The fabric cheese beneath the slices also lifts up, so I can stash even more bits of food for my dog to search for and dig out. The other half of the game is designed with longer, shaggier fabric strips that camouflage the sprinkled kibble, adding another element of fun.
The process of finding the hidden treats throughout the mat provides mental enrichment for my dog as she discovers new ways to release the food. Putting the toy together requires mere minutes, but it takes her at least 30 minutes to retrieve all of the cookies inside. After she’s done, my dog is always exhausted and ready for a relaxing nap. Even when the treats have all been found, I find my dog still playing with the mat hours later.
