Jake Gyllenhaal has left Aussie ice cream fans scratching their heads after placing a very strange gelato order.

The Oscar nominee, 45, is currently Down Under filming the comedy drama Honeymoon With Harry with Kevin Costner in Brisbane.

The Donnie Darko star took a break from filming and visited Gelato Messina in Fortitude Valley for an iced treat.

However, rather than opting for a cup or a cone to contain his gelato, Jake went with both – a secret Messina menu item known as a Unicorn.

Gelato Messina shared an image to its Instagram Story on Tuesday showing CCTV footage of the Fortitude Valley store.

Jake can be seen at the counter, dressed casually in a crisp white T-shirt and jeans, clutching a cup of gelato, which also featured an upside-down cone.

News.com.au reported that a staff member had shared an image from the footage to Messina’s internal Slack channel, which set the brand’s social media team into detective mode.

They shared a second image, zoomed in on Jake’s hand holding the mystery purchase, with the caption: ‘Us zooming in to see what he got.’

A third image, honed in even closer on Jake’s gelato was captioned with a simple: “????”.

The mystery was soon solved, however, with staff in the store confirming Jake’s order.

A subsequent image confirmed that Jake chose a mix of Bounty (a popular Australian chocolate and coconut candy bar) and Macadamia Crunch.

Jake’s snack did not end with his ‘Unicorn’, though, with the actor also walking away with two, one-litre tubs of gelato.

‘Boots on the ground (asked the staff) and #confirmed Jake loves a unicorn (cone on top with a cup).’

A spokesperson for Gelato Messina told the publication that while not an official menu item, The Unicorn was a popular hack for people who can’t decide between a cup or a cone.

‘Unicorns have always been a secret menu item that customers can order from any of our stores – order any scoop in a cup and ask for a cone on top,’ they said.

‘Less mess, extra crunch, more fun. Unicorns are popular for our customers that have been with us since the beginning (2002) and great for kids.’

They added that while the staff were certainly ‘star-struck’ upon seeing Jake in-store, they managed to ‘play it cool’. 

Jake is currently filming Honeymoon With Harry in Brisbane alongside the likes of Kevin Costner, Rita Ora, and Sarah Pidgeon.

It tells the story of a man who goes on his honeymoon with his father-in-law, after his fiancée dies just two days before the wedding.

It comes after Jake recently made a rare red carpet appearance with his long-time girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu at The Bride! premiere in London. 

Despite being romantically linked for eight years, their red carpet appearances together are few and far between. 

But stepping out together in London in February, Jake and Jeanne attended the world premiere of The Bride! – which is written and directed by his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and in which he stars as Ronnie Reed – at Cineworld Leicester Square.

The couple were seen together later in the evening as they headed to the premiere afterparty at Bardo St James, with Jake signing autographs for fans. 

 ‘I’m not going to give you timing [about wedding bells]. I think we all get into that space of work, work, work, and for a long time my career took precedence,’ Jake said of Jeanne to The Hollywood Reporter last year. 

‘But I’m at a point in my life where I realise that family really is the only thing that matters to me.’

He told the outlet he loves to cook with Jeanne, and their favourite date was attending KCRW’s Good Food Pie Fest in Los Angeles in 2024 where they hung out with a pie-baking drag queen named Bertha and ‘tasted dozens of pies’.

‘We got [tasting] tickets a month and a half early,’ Jake gushed. ‘I was like, “Babe, we can go! We can go to the pie contest!”‘
