Cillian Murphy has opened up about his disdain for the celebrity lifestyle and his hatred for ‘f***ing red carpets’ at premieres and awards ceremonies.

The actor, 49, was previously branded the ‘worst celebrity in the world’ by his co-star and he has now admitted he is ‘not good at being a personality’.

While Cillian lights up on-screen, he has said he has no interest in the ‘unhealthy’ side of fame if it includes ‘talking about yourself’.

The Peaky Blinders star is regularly snapped looking less than impressed at events, which has led to him becoming a meme due to his ‘bored’ expression.

Speaking on the topic in the Sunday Times Culture magazine, Cillian said: ‘Being a personality is not what I am good at. But then existing in this world?

‘Talking about yourself, going on f***ing red carpets? It’s not healthy if you start to believe this shit, and I’m really bad at it too. I’m an incredibly average person, really.’

It was his Oppenheimer co-star Emily Blunt who has spoken about how bad Cillian is at living life in the spotlight in the past.

During an interview with 60 Seconds, the interviewer suggested Cillian was passionate about his work as an actor, but not the celebrity side of things.

Emily agreed, and said: ‘He’s the worst celebrity in the world. He’s the best actor in the world and the worst celebrity in the world.’

Praising his talents, she added: ‘He’s my favourite actor to work with. He’s unparalleled in what he can do and how he pulls you in. The whole room crackles with a certain life force when you work with him.’

During awards season in 2024 when he was heavily nominated for Oppenheimer, fans picked up on Cillian’s dislike for the red carpet.

At the Golden Globes, where he was awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture: Drama, they noted his ‘bored’ facial expression, despite taking home a top gong.
