Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas are remaining just friends.

The Mission: Impossible actor and the Ballerina actress were first seen spending time together in February. They continued to step out together over the summer, and while on a Vermont getaway in July, the pair were photographed holding hands.

Amid reports of a breakup, a source close to the actress, 37, now tells PEOPLE that Cruise, 63, is a “dear friend and mentor” to her, and she “very much enjoys spending time with him.”

“She’s single, though, and has been for a while,” the source adds. “She stays in touch with Tom and they still have an upcoming movie project that she’s looking forward to.”

Reps for Cruise and de Armas did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

Cruise and de Armas never publicly confirmed they were dating. In July, when the actress showed Cruise around Vermont, an insider told PEOPLE that she “really enjoys spending time with him.”

“They’ve become incredibly close, and Tom continues to be a huge support, both personally and professionally,” the insider added at the time.

Prior to that, in May, de Armas addressed her many sightings with Cruise, telling Women’s Wear Daily, “Obviously, everyone knows I’m working with Tom Cruise,” teasing an action-packed project with director-producers Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie.

“And, of course, I’m doing crazy training, as you do when you’re working with Tom,” she said. “It’s another level that just keeps setting the bar higher and higher. But it’s so much fun.”

That same month, Cruise praised de Armas’ acting chops while on the red carpet at his Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning premiere.

She is a “very, very talented, great dramatic actress, comedic, tremendous ability, learns quickly,” Cruise told Extra at the time. He told Access Hollywood, “Her ability is incredible. There’s an actress that has dramatic chops, someone who’s comedic, very, very talented. … Just a great actress.”

De Armas then told Variety in June at her From the World of John Wick: Ballerina premiere, “It is very special that someone like him is supporting [Ballerina]. It is really special in general to have other actors and people supporting each other. We can do well all together.”
