Author. Journalist. Space traveler. And now, wedding crasher!
Gayle King took a page out of the Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn handbook on Saturday, May 31, adding wedding crasher to her already stacked résumé after stumbling upon a couple’s North Carolina nuptials.
The CBS Mornings co-anchor, 70, was staying at The Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa in Asheville when she learned that a wedding ceremony was taking place at the hotel, one of the grooms, former college baseball player Matt Kaplon, told Outsports.
Evidently intrigued, King asked the hotel if they could come say hello, according to the Drew University alum, who gained notoriety in 2014 after coming out to his baseball team, per Outsports.
According to Kaplon, who is now a chief of staff for a job search engine, King was in the area with Oprah Daily Creative Director Adam Glassman working on a story about Asheville’s recovery in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Their surprise presence at the wedding, he said, was like icing on an already-beautiful cake.
“It was incredible,” Kaplon told PEOPLE of the experience, adding that the crashers “were so kind!” They “were treats,” he continued, and he and husband Nicolaus Wegrzyn “were so surprised and just grateful that they wanted to come share their best wishes and congratulations with us.”
“It was not an intrusion at all, and all of our guests were shocked and excited,” Kaplon said of the surprise guests. And the couple also had a chance to chat with the crashers, he revealed.
The duo asked the grooms, “Why Asheville?” and the couple “shared that Nic had been coming there since he was young,” Kaplon said. “And me, as someone who is from the N.Y.C. area, I felt so relaxed and grounded there.”
“Asheville is such a unique and welcoming place for the LGBT community,” he said, “so we loved that we could share our special day with them.”
The N.Y.C.-based couple also told King and Glassman that they are “New Yorkers,” Kaplon added, “and they loved that.”
A group photo snapped at the ceremony shows the crashers flanking a group who includes Kaplon and Wegrzyn, a supply chain manager. The newlyweds were all smiles in the snap, and wore matching cream-colored suit jackets.
Meanwhile, King’s status as a last-minute guest was evident in her clothes, the journalist’s green sweatsuit standing out among the black-tie attire.
The brightly dressed journalist — who recently celebrated the wedding of her son, William “Will” Bumpus Jr. — also snapped a photo with just Kaplon and Wegrzyn, and posed for photos with other wedding guests, according to an Instagram post shared by attendee Rachel Hale.
“A perfect wedding weekend for the perfect couple @nicfw & @mattykap 🤗💕🕊️ (ft. @gayleking),” Hale wrote alongside her post. “Congratulations. I love you both soooo much!! ❤️.”

In the days following their May 31 wedding, the newlyweds have since shared sweet glimpses of the nuptials on Instagram.
The couple posted a carousel of photos from the ceremony — shot by Asheville-based photographer Anastasiia Ostapovich — including a snap of the grooms excitedly showing off their wedding bands. Another photo showed Kaplon wiping a tear at the altar, an outdoor path marked by an arch of white flowers, courtesy of wedding planning service BobbyMark’s Designs.
“I married my best friend yesterday in one of the most beautiful places….I love you forever @nicfw,” the former college athlete wrote alongside the pictures.
In another joint Instagram post, the pair shared a photo of themselves smiling as they walked away from the floral altar hand-in-hand.
“May 31st, 2025,” Wegrzyn simply wrote in the caption.
