Gretchen Wilson is loving her new title: tour momager!

Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of the premiere of the new CBS show The Road, the “Here for the Party” hitmaker opened up about why this felt like a second chance for her career.

“I kind of had a little bit of a hiatus. I broke my leg and was down and out for a little while and I started thinking to myself, I didn’t know whether it was time to just hang it up or if I had a few more years in me,” Wilson, 52, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“If there’s such a thing at my age, at 52, as getting a second chance at it all, that’s what I feel like is happening right now. So I just feel blessed,” Wilson — who’s now working on a re-release of her first album — adds.

For The Road, on which Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan serve as executive producers, Wilson took on the role of tour manager and mentors 12 aspiring musicians as they open for Keith Urban on tour.

Per the show’s description, “The series captures their high-stakes, unfiltered journeys and offers a backstage pass into the gritty life of a touring musician.”

“They needed somebody to come in that would be the liaison between Blake and Keith and all of the contestants,” Wilson says. “Somebody who would be a little bit more in the dugout with them.”

She continues, “It was all-encompassing, but it went from being the tour manager to sort of being the tour momager. That’s what everybody was calling me. You don’t travel around for that long with a group of people without getting really close and really rooting for them.”

Over the course of time, Wilson says it got “tough” because she couldn’t have any “favorites” — and it was hard to see contestants go home. Still, it opened her eyes to “all of the things that I’m not doing right now.”

“Watching the fire and just the want in these kids… These contestants were all so very talented and just amazing to work with. They lit a bit of a fire in me,” she says.

Working with Shelton, 49, and Urban, 57, was a walk in the park for Wilson.

“Exactly who you think they’re going to be, that’s who they are. And very professional, very talented, easygoing,” the “Redneck Woman” singer says. “And that’s the thing that I really loved about this triple pairing of me and Keith and Blake. We really have all the experience, but we also have a heart.”

While she was filming the show, Shelton’s humor made for some of her greatest moments — which led her to believe he could have a real career in comedy!

“My favorite moments obviously are Blake just being Blake, being hilarious,” she says. “I mean, these are moments that made me laugh so hard that I thought I was going to have to do the pee-pee dance all the way to the bathroom.”

She adds, “If he decides someday that he doesn’t want to be a touring singer, songwriter, or musician anymore, he can totally just go into stand up. He would kill it.”

The Road premieres on CBS on Oct. 19 at 9 p.m. ET. All episodes are available to watch the following day on Paramount+.
