- A man lets his sister stay with him rent-free on one condition — no guests — but returns home to find strangers in his living room
- Though his sister dismisses it as “no big deal,” he feels disrespected and unsafe in his own home
- After asking her to move out, his parents accuse him of being harsh, leaving him to wonder if he made the right call
A man turned to the Reddit community for support after a family disagreement left him questioning his own boundaries.
The 26-year-old, whose sister temporarily lived with him, found himself at odds after she invited friends over against his wishes.
“My younger sister (22F) graduated college a few months ago and moved in with me temporarily while she applies for jobs and gets on her feet since our parents moved south when we both left the house,” he explains in the since-deleted post.
He says they have “always gotten along pretty well,” making the situation even more difficult.

From the start, he set a clear expectation about his home. “The only thing I made clear when she moved in was that I’m not okay with people coming over. I don’t host, ever. I don’t care if it makes me weird, I just don’t feel safe around unfamiliar people in my space,” he writes.
His sister agreed to his terms, assuring him that she understood, but everything changed one weekend when he returned from a walk to find three strangers lounging in his living room.
“One of them was drinking from my mug. They were laughing, watching a show, super casual like this was their place,” he recalls, painting a vivid picture of his shock.
His sister, seemingly unfazed, just waved and said, “hope you don’t mind.” The moment left him speechless, and he decided to leave again rather than confront the situation right away.
“I didn’t say anything. I turned around and left. I was outside for like two hours just walking,” he shares.
When he finally came home, the guests were gone, but the uneasy feeling lingered, and he went to talk with his sister.
“I told her I can’t do this. I said I’m sorry but I need her to start looking for another place to stay,” he recalls, making it clear that his boundaries have been crossed.
His sister, however, tried to defend her actions. “She got really upset and said she didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. That they were only there for an hour and they weren’t loud or messy,” he recounts.

But for him, it’s not about the noise or the mess. “I told her it’s not about that, it’s about how it made me feel in my own home. I don’t think I should have to feel like a guest in my own space,” he writes, underscoring the emotional impact her decision has had on him.
Now, his sister has moved in with a friend for a few days, and their parents are weighing in. “My parents are pissed. They say I’m being extreme and ungrateful and that I should support her while she’s trying to get her life started,” he shares.
He reveals that his sister has even called him “embarrassing” in the aftermath. Despite the backlash, he stands by his decision.
“I honestly don’t know what else I could’ve done,” he explains. “It’s not about punishing her. I just don’t feel safe when stuff like this happens.
