Maya Esparza-Alexander is hoping her honest conversations about being a “one and done” mom will inspire other parents.

On her TikTok channel, the mom and content creator, 26, whose bio says she’s a “one & complete mom,” has been sharing her life as a mom to her 3-year-old daughter, and often discusses the reasons why she’s decided not to have another baby.

In one specific clip, Esparza-Alexander details why she made that decision after having her daughter with her husband. “I knew I was one and done when I realized another baby would take away from the version of motherhood I actually enjoy,” she began her video, which pictured her doing a few chores around the house.

“And if you’re new here, hey, I’m Maya, and I’m a one-and-done mom who talks about honest motherhood. Because I think more of us need to hear it without judgment,” she continued. “There was a moment where it clicked for me. One child was already pushing my limits, and the idea of doing pregnancy, postpartum and toddlerhood again was a little bit scary for me.”

“And when I pictured adding another baby to the mix, my mind and my body were like, ‘Yeah, I can’t do that again.’ And I realized choosing the version of motherhood where I can actually show up isn’t selfish, it’s responsible.”

Esparza-Alexander explained that deciding to have one baby was more about knowing your limits, and added that her daughter and her family deserve to have a happy and healthy version of her.

“So while I wish I could have more and I had the bandwidth for that, I just don’t and that’s okay. Everyone’s capacity is different and there’s literally nothing wrong with that,” she ended the video.

Now, Esparza-Alexander tells PEOPLE that realizing she was done having kids didn’t happen in one specific moment — rather, it was a slow progression.

“It wasn’t one big moment, but a slow realization that after the intensity [of the] postpartum and the newborn stage, my family felt complete, not like something was missing,” she says.

“It wasn’t one conversation but a lot of smaller check-ins as our daughter got older,” says Esparza-Alexander of approaching that topic with her husband. “Over time, we both realized how happy we were with one child and the routine we’d built. And ultimately, since I would the one going through pregnancy again — and my postpartum experience was really tough — my husband supported and respected my decision to be done.”

Seeing her videos go viral has been surreal for Esparza-Alexander, who was surprised at how many people were touched by her messages.

“It’s been overwhelming in the best way,” she says. “I didn’t realize how many people felt the same but didn’t feel safe saying it out loud.”

At the end of the day, Esparza-Alexander just wants other moms to know that motherhood is about doing what feels right for you.

“There’s no ‘right’ way to do motherhood. There’s only what works for your life, your mental health and your family,” she says. “This decision was about choosing a version of motherhood that supports my well-being so I can show up fully for my family.”
