A mother of eight from Utah who was visiting her grandchildren in Florida sustained life-threatening injuries following a horrific car crash that left her leg amputated.
The victim, later identified by family as Tamra Kendrick, was allegedly driving the wrong way on Friday, Nov. 7, when she collided with a Ford F-350 pickup truck traveling southbound, the Florida Highway Patrol said in an incident report shared with PEOPLE. Kendrick was left with critical injuries, authorities said, while the other driver had minor injuries.
Kendrick was babysitting her grandkids while their parents were on vacation, her son Brandon Kendrick wrote in a GoFundMe. None of the grandkids were in Tamra’s car at the time of the crash, according to NBC affiliate KSL.
Brandon wrote that his mother had been fighting for her life in the ICU and needed emergency surgery to amputate her left leg above the knee.
“She is also battling numerous life-threatening injuries,” Brandon detailed in the fundraiser. “Doctors removed her ruptured spleen, have given her 25+ units of blood, and performed several more emergency procedures to keep her alive.”
“She has suffered a fractured left hip socket that will require a plate, a broken left hand, a right leg fracture needing surgical plating, broken ribs, collapsed lung, brain bleed, lacerated liver, and multiple facial fractures. With more injuries being reported,” he added.
Brandon called the incident a “devastating loss” for Tamra, who has led a very active life that consisted of such activities as dancing, hiking and adventures with her family.
In a Monday, Nov. 10, update on the GoFundMe, Brandon wrote that Tamra underwent three surgeries at the hospital that took about six hours: one for her abdomen, another for her broken and damaged hip, and the amputation involving her left leg.
“Overall all good news,” Brandon stated in the Monday update. “We are very relieved with the results of today. The team of surgeons, doctors and nurses have been so amazing!”
On Wednesday, Nov. 12, Brandon said in a post that his mother’s breathing tubes were removed and she could now begin to drink and eat on her own. He added that she was “overall doing well but very loopy and exhausted.”
“She knows the extent of her injuries now, including her amputation and so far is handling it pretty well,” Brandon wrote. “Her mind is still pretty foggy and she has to be reminded what happened and why she is in the hospital.”
“My dad is doing much better — the amputation discussion and having to break the news to my mom when she woke up had been weighing very heavy on him,” he continued. “He was relieved with how well she handled learning about her amputation.”
“They spent time Laughing and smiling as my mom (still pretty drugged) said some pretty funny things,” Brandon recalled.
In an interview with KSTU, Brandon credited several good Samaritans for saving his mother’s life at the crash site.

“A serviceman — an Airman — jumped in and took off his belt and put a tourniquet on my mom’s leg, which saved her life,” he told the outlet. “She would have bled out, but civilians, citizens, Airmen, there were so many people that jumped in. That was the first miracle that happened and she was able to get to the hospital, so we feel super blessed.”
Corey Kendrick, Tamra’s husband, told The Herald Journal that his wife is in good spirits, adding. “I’ve never had so much peace — knowing it’s over and what it is … is what it is.”
The GoFundMe was created to help Tamra’s family pay for medical and travel expenses, as the incident occurred out of state. “Besides the extensive surgeries and rehab needed, she will be stuck in Florida for months which will incur many additional expenses,” the fundraiser stated.
As of Wednesday, Nov. 12, the GoFundMe has generated more than $64,000.
PEOPLE contacted Brandon for additional information on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
In an email shared with PEOPLE, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office wrote, “Our sincere prayers go out to the victim and her family as she focuses on her recovery!”
