NEED TO KNOW
- A Reddit user said that parents in her neighborhood, which she just moved to, are acting like they’re mad at her
- The potential animosity stems from her not allowing other kids to play in her yard, which has a “nice play set and trampoline”
- “It seems that all the parents in the neighborhood let the kids just run around and play in their front and backyards unsupervised (which is fine, not judging),” she said
A mother of two is not backing down from her backyard rules.
The woman explained on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum that she will not grant permission to neighborhood kids to play freely in her backyard — something that has “struck a nerve” with those children’s parents.
“We recently moved to a new house and the neighborhood is filled with kids,” the mom wrote. “I have a newborn and my son is only 4, and the kids on the street are all around the ages 5 to 9.”

She continued, “Our backyard has a nice playset and trampoline, and the kids have mentioned how the little girl who used to live in this house would have them over to play all the time.”
However, unlike the previous homeowner, the woman does not have any hankering to host any of those other kids in her yard.
“They all seem like nice kids … and always say hi, but it seems that all the parents in the neighborhood let the kids just run around and play in their front and backyards unsupervised (which is fine, not judging),” she said.
The mom emphasized, “I want my backyard to be peaceful.”

Worried that other moms are mad at her now, the woman asked, “Am I the a—— for not letting the neighborhood kids play in my backyard?”
Most Redditors sided with the mother on her decision.
“One injury and the ‘easy going’ parents will slap an expensive lawsuit on you, Invest in a fence with a locked gate, and hang ‘no trespassing’ signs,” one person suggested. “If the parents are offended, tell them if they want their kids to play in your yard they have to be present to supervise.”
Another reader wrote, “I would give the trampoline to whatever neighbor wants it in their yard. It would be interesting to see if anyone takes it.”
