A Celebrity Cruises passenger is accusing the company of negligence after she allegedly tripped over a misplaced speaker and sustained injuries on board.

Florida resident Jeannette Beres claims she was a passenger on board the Celebrity Reflection cruise ship on July 14, 2025, when the cruise line “arranged, publicized and promoted a dancing event for passengers aboard the vessel,” according to a civil complaint filed in the U.S. District Court of Southern Florida and obtained by PEOPLE.

In preparation for the event, crew allegedly cleared a circular dance floor area in the main atrium on Deck 3 an set up sound equipment necessary for a live band’s performance. However, the complaint claims one of the speakers was placed directly on the dance floor, within an area used by passengers for dancing and walking" creating a "tripping hazard in a shared space intended for passenger movement.”

Beres claims as she made her way toward the dining area after the event, she did not see the speaker and “tripped over it, fell and thereby sustained serious injuries.”

According to the complaint, Beres’ injuries include a fractured foot. She also claims she continues to suffer from “mental anguish, disability, and the inability to lead a normal life.” Beres also pointed to alleged past and future medical, hospital and related expenses.

The complaint argues Celebrity had prior notice of potentially dangerous conditions involving the placement or leaving objects in passenger areas and walkways. The document lists 19 previous litigations involving passengers tripping and falling on objects on board Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships, as both cruise lines fall under the Royal Caribbean Group.

Beres’ complaint raises four separate counts of negligence against Celebrity Cruises, including negligent maintenance, negligent failure to warn and negligent failure to inspect.

Beres and her legal team are demanding a trial by jury and are seeking damages in excess of $75,000.

PEOPLE has reached out to Beres’ attorneys and Celebrity Cruises for comment.
