The Best Facial Hair Removal Products We Tested: Gillette, Dermaflash, Athena Club

Jennifer Chan is a contributing shopping writer at PEOPLE with over 20 years of editorial experience as a beauty expert, on-air TV host, and journalist. She has tested hundreds — if not thousands — of products throughout her career.

If you’ve ever noticed pesky peach fuzz or facial hair when glancing at the mirror, you’re not alone. Many of us have facial hair we want to remove, which is why handheld razors, depilatory creams, traditional wax strips, and dermaplaning devices are popular. Removing facial hair can exfoliate your skin and allow your skincare’s active ingredients to penetrate deeper, providing a smoother surface for makeup application.

I personally always feel more confident after I dermaplane my face at home and love the satisfying feeling of revealing smoother, more radiant skin in seconds flat. I also notice that my complexion tends to look a bit more youthful and even-toned when I remove my vellus hair (the nearly translucent fluff that many women have on their faces), which is why I genuinely look forward to this step in my skincare routine on a weekly basis.

Since there are dozens of options on the market, we rounded up 24 facial hair removal products and put them to the test. Our reviewers tried each solution for a total of six weeks to get an accurate assessment of what worked and what didn’t.

Read on for the most effective facial hair removers that will get you smooth and supple in no time.

NEED TO KNOW

Daryn Herzfeld, a Miami-based Master Medical Aesthetician and CEO of Feel the Heal chatted with PEOPLE to share insights on best practices for facial hair removal. Herzfeld, whose celebrity clients include Perla Hudson and Teedra Moses, tells PEOPLE if you can’t get in to see a professional for an in-office treatment, there are safe alternatives that work quite well.

  • Dermaplaning: The skincare pro recommends dermaplaning at home, but stresses the importance of using a clean, sharp tool slowly and safely to ensure no damage to your complexion. “Dermaplaning is a gentle exfoliation technique that removes dead skin cells and peach fuzz, leaving your skin feeling smooth, bright, and glowing,” says Herzfeld. “The process is quick and painless and it helps improve the texture of your skin — making it ideal for flawless makeup application, better product penetration, and a healthy glow.”
  • Waxing: “For the best results, always choose methods that are safe and specifically formulated for the face,” says Herzfeld, cautioning that “DIY waxing at home can be risky, and without the proper technique or experience, you could end up with irritation, burns, or even scars.”
  • Creams: Herzfeld also encourages hair removal cream users to pay mind to the intended skin for each product. “Hair removal creams that aren’t specifically formulated for the face can be too harsh and may cause chemical burns or allergic reactions, especially if left on for too long.”

Whichever method you use to remove your facial hair, Herzfeld advises you to immediately follow up with a soothing moisturizer to keep your skin calm and hydrated.

Best Single-Use Dermaplaning Tool: Schick Hydro Silk Touch-Up Facial Razor

Amazon

Our tester for this affordable, compact facial razor said their peach fuzz isn’t super noticeable from a distance but is more obvious up close, so they were eager to try this facial razor. While there was a learning curve to using the tool correctly, they loved the added skin exfoliation benefits and described their skin as “extremely smooth” and “soft” in the days following their dermaplaning experience. A word to the wise: Use light pressure with this one to avoid unnecessary nicks and irritation.

Best Electric Dermaplaning Tool: Gillette Venus Mini Facial Hair Remover

Amazon

For a foolproof option, consider the Gillette Venus Mini Facial Hair Remover. Our tester raved about its ease of use, noting the smooth result. They loved how small and portable this portable was — it fits well in most handbags. Our tester’s facial hair came off quickly with just a single pass. While they didn’t experience any breakouts or reactions after use, they also didn’t notice a particular glow or radiance to their skin either — an important factor to note if you’re seeking exfoliation benefits, too.

Best Dermaplaning Tool for Overall Skincare Benefits: Dermaflash Luxe+

Sephora

The Dermaflash Luxe+ exceeded our tester’s expectations in every way, that is, after they got the technique just right. Our tester watched several how-to videos before they felt confident enough to use this high-tech sonic dermaplaning tool that promises smoother, more radiant skin, improved texture, and an overall anti-aging effect with continued use.

Our tester, who has heavy peach fuzz, noted that the experience was “fantastic” and couldn’t get over how radiant and smooth their skin looked and felt after each use. They also loved how quick and hassle-free the removal process was for facial fuzz, mentioning their preference for these results over traditional waxing.

Best Facial Hair Removal Cream: Flamingo Facial Hair Removal Cream

Amazon

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly hair removal cream that really works, this option from Flamingo only needed five minutes to get to work and deliver on its promise (despite our tester’s thicker peach fuzz). The applicator is built into the bottle, so application is easy and mess-free, and our tester reported no discomfort or pain during or after the entire process.

If you’re not a fan of chemical smells, you may want to opt for another solution, but if that doesn’t bother you, this depilatory cream received high marks all around. It even comes with a calming balm to apply afterwards.

Best Wax Strips for Face: Athena Club Wax Strip Kit for the Face

Athena Club

While waxing may not be for everyone, a lot of people love the smooth, long-lasting results of a good at-home wax, and this kit from Athena Club delivers just that. Our tester was impressed with the immediate fuzz-free benefits, citing that the wax strips removed all of their upper lip hair in one fell swoop and noted that the hair seemed to grow a lot slower with this method than others.

That being said, at-home waxing isn’t for the weak. You’ll have to mentally prepare yourself for the abrupt — and sometimes painful — process of pulling wax off your face and you may also endure some visible redness or tenderness to the touch directly thereafter, like our tester experienced.

Best Wax Strips for Brow Shaping: Nad’s Precision Eyebrow Wax Wand

Walmart

If you’re looking for an alternative to tweezing your brows or booking a regular appointment, this Nad’s Eyebrow Wax Wand may be just what you’re looking for. It’s budget-friendly, effective, and fast. Our tester loved how they could effortlessly shape and groom their brows with this “easy and convenient” miracle worker and said their skin was left smooth and soft.

Overall, they much preferred this method over tweezing stray hairs, but they wished this product worked just as well for the upper lip area, too. Our verdict: It’s definitely worth a try if you’re picky about your brows or nervous that someone might take too much off during a salon visit.

More Facial Hair Removers We Liked

When it comes to removing facial hair, there’s no shortage of effective options for every budget and personal preference. We tested dozens of products and wanted to highlight a few more that didn’t disappoint but didn’t completely blow us away, either. Our favorite among the honorable mentions has to be the Kitsch Dermaplaning Tool, which is simple and straightforward and a terrific value.

How We Tested

Removing facial hair is a delicate process that sounds intimidating but is easy enough for anyone to do with a little patience. Our testers meticulously followed the manufacturer’s instructions for each of 24 products and always started with clean, dry skin before each use.

After removing their facial hair, our testers splashed water on their faces to remove any remaining residue and avoided active ingredients like retinol directly after to prevent any irritation or reactions. Each product was tested at least five to six times within a six-week testing period and results and immediate feedback was recorded in real time.

Complete Your Routine

And now that your complexion is fuzz-free and perfectly smooth, it’s only fitting to round out your skincare routine with a few more trusted products that will nourish and protect your skin. We’ve personally tested everything below and highly recommend this waterproof face cleansing scrub brush to gently rid your skin of any impurities, or this genius high-tech device that packs eight different facial health modalities in one.

Once you’re cleansed, tightened, and toned, layer on this lightweight tinted moisturizer with SPF 25, which is perfect for everyday use. It blurs imperfections and evens out your skin tone. Keep scrolling to stock up on our tested essentials to put your best face forward.
