But some notable talent in the running among other awards groups were left off, and a few names made surprising appearances on the list. Ahead of the 32nd annual Actor Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 1, streaming live on Netflix, read on for some of this year’s biggest snubs and shocks.

Snub: Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt

Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine was expected to smash into this awards season, but Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s MMA fighting biopic has followed up a disappointing box office performance with a noticeable lack of nominations. Both actors’ critically acclaimed performances are nominated at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, to be held Jan. 11. But neither were recognized by their acting peers to land nods at the Actor Awards.

Surprise: Miles Caton

Miles Caton is having quite the week! For his stirring work in Ryan Coogler’s horror hit Sinners, he earned double nominations, in both the film Supporting Actor and Ensemble categories, at the Actor Awards. The news comes on the heels of his win at the Critics Choice Awards, where he took home the Best Young Actor Prize. At only age 20, the sky’s the limit for the multi-talented Caton.

Snub: Kristen Bell

After scoring Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globe nominations, usual contender Kristen Bell was shut out for her role in Netflix rom-com Nobody Wants This. However, her costar Adam Brody got the show’s only nod this year, in the Male Actor in a Comedy Series category.

Surprise: Stranger Things

No, Stranger Things didn’t get any love for its acting, so you could consider lack of recognition for Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Winona Ryder and their castmates a snub. But after an impressive final season of Netflix’s megahit, it’s earned rare Actor Award recognition — in the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series, which is not nothing.

Snub: Cynthia Erivo

After Wicked: Part One dominated last year’s awards season, earning love in particular from the SAG Awards’ nominating committee, its sequel is paling in comparison. Wicked: For Good earned only one nod at the Actor Awards: for Supporting Actress Ariana Grande, reprising her role as Oz’s Glinda the Good Witch. Notably snubbed is her bestie and costar Cynthia Erivo, who also was not among this year’s Critics Choice nominees. The British star is nominated at the Globes, although she’s reportedly not attending that show due to her next project.

Odessa A’zion in ‘Marty Supreme’.

Surprise: Odessa A’Zion

Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme fared well on the Actor Award nominations list, with Supporting Actress Odessa A’Zion recognized as a double nominee including its ensemble. (Her fellow supporting actress, Gwyneth Paltrow, did not make the supporting actress list, but is recognized in the ensemble category.) With lead actor Timothée Chalamet earning prizes at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Critics Choice Awards, it’s clear this ping pong adventure — and A’Zion’s heartfelt performance — is resonating with award voters.

George Clooney and Adam Sandler in ‘Jay Kelly’.

Snub: George Clooney and Adam Sandler

Noah Baumbach’s Hollywood tale Jay Kelly has failed to register with this particular slice of that community. Its presumed contenders, leading actor George Clooney and supporter Adam Sandler, came away empty-handed among the Actor Award nominees, as did its star-studded cast including Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough and co-writer Emily Mortimer.

Surprise: Kate Hudson

For her work as half of a real-life Neil Diamond tribute band in Song Sung Blue, Kate Hudson is officially an Actor Award contender in the lead actress category — notoriously a difficult one to crack. Erivo, Amanda Seyfried, Renate Reinsve and Jennifer Lawrence were all presumed contenders here, but it’s Hudson in the Craig Brewer-directed biopic who pulled through.

Snub: Jeremy Allen White

Jeremy Allen White’s Actor Award snub this year is two-fold: for leading hit comedy The Bear, for which he’s previously won several awards, and for playing Bruce Springsteen in biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. White’s name has appeared on this award show’s lead comedy actor list plenty in the past few years, but this time he’s only nominated in the comedy ensemble category for his still-acclaimed work on The Bear

Surprise: Jesse Plemons

The lead actor category is, of course, one of the toughest to crack every film awards season. Jesse Plemons, for his work as a disturbed conspiracy theorist in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, has entered the field alongside heavyweights Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke and Michael B. Jordan. It’s a particular surprise after Plemons failed to earn recognition at the Critics Choice (although he is among the Globe nominees). Is he this category’s dark horse contender?

Elle Fanning in ‘Sentimental Value’.

Snub: Sentimental Value

Widely considered by critics and award pundits a shoo-in, Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value features a tight-knit consisting of Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning. All four actors failed to achieve Actor Award recognition this year, signaling a possible overestimation of enthusiasm for this international Oscar contender.

‘Landman’.

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

Surprise: Landman

The hit Taylor Sheridan series Landman received rare recognition — for Cast Ensemble in a Drama Series and Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series — after getting shut out of other awards shows. Sheridan’s shows tend to be ensemble showcases, making this tale of Texas oil barons a serious contender here.

Snub: Carrie Coon

Carrie Coon being shut out of a nomination for season 3 of Mike White’s hit The White Louts (while her costars Parker Posey and Amiee Lou Wood were represented) is a surprise not just because she was nominated for an Emmy and other prizes. It’s also a surprise because, well, she’s Carrie Coon!

Chase Infiniti in ‘One Battle After Another’.

Surprise: Chase Infiniti

This awards season’s biggest breakout story may be Chase Infiniti, the 25-year-old leading lady of Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. The film dominated the list of Actor Awards, earning recognition in every individual category plus the ensemble cast: Infiniti, DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro.

Snub: Adam Scott

Adam Scott scored nominations at the 2025 Emmys and 2026 Golden Globes for his riveting work in Apple TV+ drama Severance, but failed to snag one in the Actor Awards’ Male Actor in a Drama category. His costar Britt Lower was singled out for individual recognition, but Scott and other previous award contenders John Turturro, Patricia Arquette and Tramell Tillman (this year’s Critics Choice winner!) are only in the running in the drama ensemble category.
