A woman says her co-worker spent the night acting like she was drunk, then got mad when she learned the punch was actually non-alcoholic.
In a post on Reddit‘s “AITA,” the woman said her boss recently hosted a “potluck-style work party” and that she volunteered to bring the punch.
One co-worker — “we’ll call [her] Sandy,” the woman wrote — got “louder and more dramatic than normal” after drinking the beverage and even began “stumbling around the party.”
Initially, the woman said she didn’t think much of it, assuming the 42-year-old co-worker was spiking her own drinks, but after Sandy said she fell off a chair “because she was so drunk,” she demanded to know what was in the punch.
But when the woman told Sandy it was just a mix of soda, orange juice and juice concentrate, her co-worker, who insisted she’d been drinking the punch all night and was “really feeling it,” didn’t believe her.
“I told her that I didn’t put any alcohol in it, and asked if maybe someone else had spiked the punch bowl,” the woman wrote.

But nobody at the party owned up to that and another coworker who doesn’t drink went so far as to say they’d also been drinking the punch all night and felt “completely sober.”
Sandy then “got really quiet” and went to the bathroom by herself, the woman wrote. Although everybody at the party tried to “laugh it off,” it wasn’t long before Sandy left.
But she didn’t just leave the party, she also sent the Redditor an “angry text…about how I shouldn’t have embarrassed her like that.”
The woman went on to say that Sandy has “been hostile to me at work ever since, and is basically refusing to talk to me.”
“I didn’t think I did anything wrong, and most of my coworkers agree with me, but some say that I should have just let her go on thinking that the punch was alcoholic to save her the embarrassment, and I’m wondering now if I’m in the wrong,” the woman added.
Most of the commenters sided with the original poster, with one person pointing out that Sandy likely experienced something called “the placebo effect,” which may have caused her to feel drunk because she believed she was consuming alcohol.
“Sandy’s actually not weird or lying for ‘feeling it’ when she hadn’t had any actual alcohol,” another person wrote, adding, “most people do the same to a greater or lesser degree (they just aren’t usually jerks about it to the person who made the punch).”
Meanwhile, other commenters felt the problem was that Sandy could not moderate her drinking at a work event, whether she was consuming alcohol or not.
“Even if it did have alcohol it was a PARTY AT THE BOSSES HOUSE,” one person wrote. “She shouldn’t have let herself start acting like that at a party with co workers.”
And other users felt like maybe Sandy was just trying to embarrass the Redditor in question. “Sandy is a drama queen, and her goal was to embarrass you, and start trouble for you with the bosses,” read one comment. “Don’t feel a bit sorry for her.”
