Woman Steps Back from Family After Criticism of Healthy Choices

  • A woman says her family mocks her for hobbies like hiking and camping as well as her decision to cut back on alcohol
  • Hurt by repeated comments from her mom and sister, she’s started spending less time at home
  • She turned to Reddit, asking if she’s wrong for prioritizing her happiness and well-being

A woman turns to Reddit for support following growing tensions with her family over her lifestyle choices and the things she enjoys. The 22-year-old says she and her family “generally get on very well up until recently,” but things changed after she started dating her boyfriend, 23.

Since meeting him, she has finally been able to do things she has “always wanted to do but never had anyone to do them with.” She explains in her post that she has been climbing mountains, camping and watching meteor showers, saying she is “absolutely loving it.”

Her mother, 54, doesn’t share the same enthusiasm. “She thinks we got too serious too quickly,” the woman says, adding that she and her boyfriend had early, honest conversations about marriage, children and how they wanted to live because they “didn’t want to waste time on a relationship that wouldn’t last.”

The couple found they agreed on everything and were “very happy,” but her mother “just doesn’t like him.” The woman believes this may be because she is now out of the house more, pointing out that she once invited her mom to go hill walking after buying boots for the activity, but her mother “never put [in] the effort to join me.”

Her mom, she says, is the kind who loves big family gatherings and Facebook posts showing off how close everyone is. While the woman says she is fine with this, she recently made a change that has stirred more tension — deciding to stop drinking alcohol except on big occasions like “Christmas, birthdays, celebrations etc.”

Her family has “always been big drinkers,” often having wine with dinner or sharing bottles at gatherings. She says she realized “how unhealthy we were” and chose to stop drinking, but this decision has been met with comments like “oh her body is her temple today” and “she’s just being boring like usual,” often from her mom and her 19-year-old sister.

She tries to brush off the remarks but admits she is “obviously still hurt by these comments.” In recent months, she has been focusing on healthier choices — eating better, being more active and drinking less — yet says she has been made to feel guilty for them.

Conflict isn’t something she handles well, describing herself as someone who usually keeps the peace. But after hearing these comments repeatedly, she has “blown up at my family for these unnecessary comments,” though she says nothing has changed.

The only relief she has found is “not being around them as much,” which has led her to spend more time with friends and her boyfriend, who share her opinions on drinking. However, this has caused yet another problem.

She says she is now “made to feel bad for not spending as much time in the house with my family,” even though she has told them how much the remarks have hurt her. She describes feeling stuck between wanting to protect her happiness and being pressured to keep the same habits as her family.

Turning to Reddit, she requests “some outsider perspectives and some unbiased opinions.” She is met with encouragement from commenters who support her decision to distance herself from negativity.

“You do you and stick with those that actually enjoy you for who you are,” one person writes. Another adds, “Stepping back should be the response to anyone who treats you this way. They’re making a choice to be mean for no good reason and that choice should have consequences.”

For now, the woman continues to find joy in the activities she loves and the healthier path she has chosen.
