An 11-year-old boy has died in a rollover crash in Chicago.

At around 11:10 a.m. local time on Sunday, May 17, troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash westbound on Interstate 290 at 25th Street, Maywood in Cook County, the Illinois State Police said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while five others were rushed to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

The deceased individual was later identified as 11-year-old Iker Paredes of Chicago by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, local outlets ABC 7 and Fox 32 reported.

The Illinois State Police launched an “active and ongoing investigation” into the fatal incident as traffic was diverted onto 17th Street, per the news release. 

The outbound lanes on the highway remained closed until around 4 p.m. local time as the scene was cleaned up, according to NBC Chicago.

It currently remains unclear what led up to the crash.

The incident came just hours after another fatal traffic incident on the highway left one person dead and eight others injured. 

At around 3 a.m., troopers had been called to Interstate 290 westbound at Ashland Avenue.

“Traffic was slow/stopped when a passenger vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle and caused a chain reaction that involved four vehicles in total,” said Illinois State Police in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.

“A total of 8 occupants were transported to local area hospitals with injuries. One of those occupants transported was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the news release continued. 

“The right lane and several ramps were shut down for the traffic crash investigation and reopened at approximately 7:54 a.m,” police concluded. “No further information is available.”
