A 12-year-old South African figure skater died after weeks in the hospital following an electric scooter accident.
Kira Meyer, a "cherished member" of the South African Figure Skating Association, the organization said in an Instagram post, suffered a brain injury in the accident on Sunday, May 10 that left her in a coma.
Her mom, Angelique Meyer, shared the news on Facebook.
"She suffered a brain injury and was taken to Milpark Hospital by helicopter,” Angelique wrote. "The brain scan did not bring good news, but we know God is in control. Please pray with us, the next 48 hours are very important for recovery and that the swelling will go down."

Six days later, Angelique wrote in an emotional post that her daughter was declared brain dead.
"I have been sitting with my phone on my lap for the last 30 minutes to get the words," Angelique wrote. "Kira was declared brain dead by 3 doctors yesterday. Her lungs also gave in. Although she is still connected to machines, she is already safe at Jesus’ feet."
Angelique explained in her post that Kira was experiencing an "unnatural death," according to the doctors tending to her daughter, and "processes must be followed before she is declared dead as a whole," which she said they as her parents are "still trying" to comprehend.
"We are not yet ready for the post with 'rest in peace' or 'angel wings.' We as her parents will speak the words when the time is right, when her little body is no longer connected to machines and when we have a time of death," she concluded.
On Tuesday, May 19, Angelique announced that Kira had died.
"As we all know, Kira was loved by all, she always wanted to know who is coming to watch with all her sports and public speaking," she wrote, along with an invitation to a memorial service for Kira.
The invite read, "In loving memory of Kira Meyer. A beautiful soul, forever loved and deeply missed beyond words," continuing, "With broken hearts, we invite family and friends to join us as we celebrate the beautiful life of our precious daughter, Kira."
The South African skating community shared their support with an Instagram post.
"It is with profound sadness that the South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA) marks the passing of Kira Meyer. Kira was a cherished member of our skating community, and her presence, both on and off the ice, will be deeply missed," the caption began.
