Jennifer Garner’s Outfit Blueprint

Straw Tote Bags:

White Skirts:

Crochet Tops:

Whenever I try to get dressed lately, it feels like I’m grasping at straws.

But when I saw Jennifer Garner, 54, on the cover of Better Homes & Gardens, it all became clear: Instead of focusing on how my outfit looks, I should be honing in on its functionality. Garner’s breezy knit sweater is a clever cover-up for windy beach days, while her lightweight skirt can go from work straight to the pool.

Last but not least, her roomy straw tote bag — which looks similar to one I just spotted on her bestie Reese Witherspoon’s Instagram — is a beach bag, carry-on, and work tote all in one. TL;DR: My shopping focus has been too narrow, so now I’m picking up the versatile lookalikes below.

As a fellow small-bag aficionado turned big-bag lady, the one kind of tote I’m desperate for is a straw version. Why? Not only do celebrities like Meghan Markle and Garner have them on hand, but this one in particular comes with a pouch that “keeps everything secure and makes it easy to switch from beach day to errands,” said one Amazon shopper.

I can pack it with tons of essentials like my laptop, lunchbox, and more, so I can carry it from deskside to dockside without needing a pit stop for a bag change. It’s also at its lowest price in 30 days (I’m chalking it up to Prime Day!), which is tempting me even more.

I’m always hesitant to buy white skirts because they usually end up being sheerer than I want. Luckily, one shopper said this one is truly “not see-through,” so I won’t have to wear special undergarments with them. (Because I feel like that defeats the whole purpose; If I wanted to wear shorts, I would!) I also love the drawstring waist that lets me loosen or tighten it depending on how I’m feeling that day.

I know sweaters are typically associated with fall and winter, but I wear them year-round. Obviously, I’m not going to bundle up in thick wool, but something like this open-knit gem is actually super useful on overcast days since it has some coverage but won’t make you overheat. You can also wear it off the shoulder, according to one shopper, which is my favorite kind of top when it’s hot out but I don’t want to wear a skin-baring tank top.
