Birthday parties at Erin and Ben Napier’s house might look a little different.
The HGTV stars spoke with Today for a new interview and shared that when it comes to their kids’ birthday parties, they abide by one rule that might be unpopular to some. Erin and Ben are parents to daughters Helen, 7, and Mae, 4.
“Our rule is, until they’re old enough to plan it themselves, it’s supper at grandparents,” Ben shares.
“If your 4-year-old’s birthday party looks like a wedding, what do they have to look forward to?” asks Erin. “Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think there’s a lot of moms out there who feel the same way I do.”

Back in January, Erin shared a sweet post on Instagram after she noticed that her daughter Mae was quiet all morning after dropping off her sister Helen at school. The Home Town Takeover host asked her daughter what she’d do during the day now that her sister is back at school, and the little one had an adorable response.
“Mae was quiet after we dropped Helen off at school this morning after she’d been home all week with the holiday and weather days,” Erin wrote in the caption of her Instagram post that featured her daughter lying in bed under the covers reading a book.
“@scotsman.co asked her, ‘Mae Mae what you gonna do today since Sissy is back to school?’ she said ‘…..My day will be small without Helen.’ 💔 I felt that.”
Last September, Erin shared that her older daughter Helen was already following in her design footsteps when she revealed on Instagram that she’d designed the house she wants to live in when she’s “all grown up.”
In a video shared to Erin’s account — complete with inspiration photos of homes that represent her daughter’s vision — the designer revealed that Helen has been brainstorming a “little cottage that’s wood with a brick chimney,” and plans to build it in the field by the pond on the family’s weekend country house.
She explained that the images and details are “*as dictated to me at bedtime and illustrated by Pinterest images i could find.*” Erin added, per Helen, that the house “will smell like s’mores inside and we will play Christmas music mostly but sometimes fall sounding music.”
“I’ve never wanted to visit a place that doesn’t exist so badly,” the mom of two concluded her caption.
