An Iowa man was sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with the fatal shooting of his friend on New Year’s Day.

Jordan Isaac Carmi, 31, pleaded guilty on Friday, July 10, to reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury, involuntary manslaughter and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the death of 30-year-old Tony Alexander Young.

He was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Young’s estate.

Carmi told District Judge Samantha Gronewald at sentencing, “I accidentally shot my friend,” according to a Polk County Attorney’s Office news release.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 after Carmi got into an argument with several other people near his apartment.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Carmi said he retrieved his gun after a few people refused to leave his apartment. After they left, Carmi said he and Young debated going after the group.

“I thought I could end the conversation by pointing the gun at him," Carmi said, per prosecutors. "I was drunk and high and handling a loaded weapon, which was incredibly stupid."

Prosecutors said Carmi expressed remorse over his friend's death.

“I need everyone to understand in no uncertain terms that Tony did not deserve what happened to him,” he said, per prosecutors.

Young was described by his mother, Yvette Young, as a loving father and “a vibrant, effervescent personality.”

“He always brought music to my house, and now there is none,” she told the court, according to prosecutors.

Young’s girlfriend said their child is “trying to understand why his Daddy is never coming home.”

“He has been given a life sentence of grief,” she added.

Young’s father, Tony Young, said he would pray for Carmi and hoped he used his prison time to reflect on what happened. “I want you to spend enough time to truly, truly reflect and be the person you say you want to be,” he said.

According to prosecutors, Carmi has a previous conviction in 2016 for intent to distribute drugs in Utah.
