Police arrested eight suspects following a smash-and-grab burglary at a California jewelry store that was captured on security footage.
Employees at Classic Jewelers in Anaheim reported that a group “intentionally rammed a dark-colored Nissan Rogue into the front of the business” before stealing merchandise Friday afternoon, Jan. 23, according to a press release shared by the Anaheim Police Department.
Footage obtained by ABC 7 and KTLA shows the car crashing into the storefront and masked thieves rifling through merchandise before fleeing in two separate vehicles.
“During the burglary, the suspects also stole a firearm from behind the counter that belonged to the business,” police said.
A short time later, police spotted one of the two getaway vehicles, but it ended up in a multi-car crash near Orangethorpe Avenue. The driver and three passengers fled, but police quickly caught the driver and subsequently arrested three others believed to be connected, per police.
A police helicopter later spotted the second vehicle in Fullerton, which was also involved in a multi-car crash near Euclid Street and Malvern Avenue. Police said they were not pursuing the car, but when they arrived at the scene, they arrested two people believed to be involved in the burglary.
A handgun was recovered from the second crash scene, and some stolen jewelry was retrieved from both locations. Hours later, police found and arrested two more suspects at separate homes. Several uninvolved motorists were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries, according to police.
Ramzy Tabello, owner of Classic Jewelers, told KTLA that the thieves stole roughly $1 million in gold and jewelry during the burglary.
“They started smashing my showcases…they ran to me and grabbed my gun,” Tabello recalled. “My life flashed before my eyes.”
